Did You Receive a “Free Gift” Email That Appeared to Be From Costco?

There are scam emails and texts circulating the internet claiming to be from Costco. Usually these emails look something like this:

Once you click the link you complete a survey of a few questions and then are taken to a page where you’re asked to pay a relatively small amount (usually $9 or $10) and check out. The websites are designed to make it look like you’re buying a Yeti wagon or other item for a deal. In reality you are being signed up for a “chance” to win the wagon. What’s worse we’ve seen victims put on a recurring subscription for chances to “win” on a monthly basis. In reality you just get charged over and over. If that happened to you contact us for a free evaluation.

We’re investigating

Our law firm has handled multiple cases of these recurring subscription trial scams in the past. In several cases we’ve filed class actions and gotten substantial settlements. Our most recent subscription scam lawsuit resulted in two settlements collectively worth $7.5 million. (5.5 million and 2 million) This scam appears to be similar. We’re looking for people who have fallen victim to this “Costco” scam to learn more.

This Is Not Actually Costco

Despite the logo in the label this “promotion” has nothing to do with Costco. In fact some of the websites even have fine print that says “not affiliated with Costco.” This is not Costco approved.

Victim Reports

We’re seeing reports of people who fell victim to this scam all over the internet. Reddit has several posts on this very issue.

What To Do

If you’ve been a victim of this scam it is important to save every scrap of evidence. If possible go back to the website and take screenshots. Save your emails from the company (if you’re lucky enough to get one). Save any texts. Record the time and date of any calls with the company. (Recording any calls to the company is ok if you clearly disclose that you’re recording at the beginning.) All of this evidence will be critical in any case. In addition you should dispute any charges and cancel the card you used to sign up. If you’re interested in pursuing the offenders in a claim then contact us to discuss your options. Our firm works on a contingent fee so there are no out-of-pocket costs to you. And if we are able to file a case as a class action then you’ll be helping all the other victims of the scam.
