Can I file a lawsuit over the Garden Grove chemical leak?

A serious chemical leak is happening in Garden Grove, California, and our law firm is monitoring and investigating claims against the responsible parties. Kneupper & Covey has a Huntington Beach location very close to Garden Grove, and founding attorney Kevin Kneupper lives in Huntington Beach, so this issue hits close to home.

As of today, May 23, 2026, it’s not clear how extensive the damage will be. The evacuation is ongoing and local authorities are still unsure whether there will be additional leaking of toxic chemicals, or even an explosion from an escalating chain reaction that might send a cloud of fumes into the air and spread it around Orange County.

If you’re one of the people or businesses affected, you may have a legal claim. And our law firm is experienced in mass tort actions as well as class actions. We recently obtained class action settlements of $7.5 million and $12.5 million in lawsuits under federal racketeering laws. We’ve also won big awards for consumers, including a recent award for over $600,000 for a consumer injured in a bank account fraud. And we regularly fight and win against big insurance companies.

If you want to know more or submit your claim for investigation, fill out our form or give us a call and we’ll review your claim.

What kinds of legal claims might exist based on the Garden Grove chemical disaster?

The full extent of how bad this is going to be isn’t known. But there have already been 40,000 people evacuated. That means at a minimum, there are businesses in the area that have had to shut down and may have to stay shut down for an extended period. Any business owner who’s effected may easily have a claim.

Then there’s the homeowners. This leak might affect their home value. Would you buy a home that was right next to this site after this has happened? Would you pay as much as before if you did? Homeowners in the area may face a hard time selling for years to come. And that assumes the leak doesn’t get worse, and doesn’t lead to an explosion.

There’s also anyone who ultimately gets exposed to the chemicals. The chemical people are most concerned about, methyl methacrylate, causes lots of side effects. ABC News has described it as a “highly hazardous substance that can pose significant health and safety risks depending on exposure.” They quote the Orange County Fire Authority as saying that “it can progress to a point where, yes, you would probably require hospitalization, if not more.”

Anyone who gets exposed and has health consequences could have a claim for a lawsuit as well.

And there may be damage that isn’t even foreseen yet. We don’t know at this time how bad this will get.

What company is responsible for the Garden Grove incident?

We don’t know all the details about what happened at this point. But we do know that the tank of methyl methacrylate that’s in danger is at an aerospace facility run by a company called GKN Aerospace. They make landing gears, jet engines, and other airplane parts. And the LA Times is reporting that there were OSHA violations at the site, including issues with improper inspections of equipment.

The parent company, GKN, is based in the United Kingdom, and it’s a very large company with $10 billion a year in revenue.

We expect there will be serious investigation into what happened, but ultimately, we think the buck stops with whoever is running the facility and responsible for its safety.

What should I do if I think I may have a claim?

Our attorneys are happy to evaluate your claims. You don’t have to file a lawsuit right away, but it’s good to get the process started if you think you’ve been effected in a serious way. That’s because you will want to save any relevant documents and materials, save proof of your damages, and make sure you have someone who can fight for your rights.

And for the businesses and homeowners in the area, their lives have already been upended. We may not know how bad the damage will be yet, but we know it’s happened, and we know that for at least 40,000 people, it’s been serious.

We’re local to Orange County and we care about the health and safety of its residents. Give us a call, or fill out our form, and we’ll fight to keep something like this from happening again.
